On the Sunday, January 9th edition of The Travel Guys… 

  • In the Travel News, the CDC announced EVERY ship sailing in US waters as of last Wednesday had COVID cases on board. With Sex and The City’s reboot on TV, the tour of its hotspots in the Big Apple has also returned. A group of partying Canadians, who whooped it up on the plane on the way to Mexico, find themselves without a way home.
  • Airlines play a lot of games with seat selection. In recent years, they have figured out a way to monetize almost every desirable seat on the plane, and even some undesirable ones. In our Smarter Traveler segment, we talk about different strategies for avoiding the up charges.
  • If you are a traveler, you have a friend at Travelers United. The consumer group works to try and make airlines, cruise lines and the like behave themselves. Director Charlie Leocha joins us to discuss his disappointment in the lack of consumer friendly directives coming from the White House. Everything from family seating on planes to timely refunds are on Charlie’s plate.

Mark says, “great, now two crummy airlines are combined into one.” Crystal Cruises is done pretending they will be back in business on April 30th. Industry insiders say they have fired staff and are folding their tent.
  • The Crystal Cruises situation has caused a lot of would-be cruisers to be faced with wondering, “How do I get my money back?” We have some tips on getting in line for a refund from a bankrupt company, tips that can apply in lots of similar situations besides Crystal Cruises.
  • During COVID, traveling nurses have really come into their own. Mark met one during a recent hospital stay, and Jamee shares a little about his unique profession with us.

The Global Dream, is still under construction in a German shipyard. If it is finished, it will hold 9,500 of your closest friends.
  • The federal mask mandate will expire on March 18th. Will it be dropped, extended briefly, or given a longer extension?
  • In our Smarter Traveler segment, we talk about buying tickets from “secondary-sellers” and what some of the unseen risks are in buying tickets on the open market.

  • In our Smarter Traveler segment, we revisit the decision of whether or not to pay an additional charge for seats on the plane. Mark points out there are a few situations where you need to consider it.
  • Sonoma’s International Film Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary. It starts Wednesday and we have a look at some of the highlights.
  • Finally, Mark talks about International Women’s Day, which was on the calendar. He points out the hypocrisy of companies who say one thing in situations like this, but their actions don’t always support those comments.

  • In the Travel News, spring breakers are headed to Florida in record numbers as leisure travel rebounds to pre-COVID levels. Business travel, however, continues to lag. This is a problem for hotels in particular, because business travelers pay higher rates, and spend more in the hotel on food and beverage than leisure travelers.
  • In our Smarter Traveler segment, we talked about the importance of reading ALL the information in those special offers which are out there right now. “Cancel without penalty until 48 hours of departure,” etc. Many of these “deals” have exceptions in them you could drive a cruise ship through.
  • Road Reporter Scott Angeletti checks in to tell us about two fabulous recent adventures to Alaska and Yellowstone Park. Who goes there in the middle of winter? Scott does, and he has quite the story to tell.
  • Finally, Mark takes a look at travel companies and the Russian war with Ukraine. Some are shutting down operations, but some are only “stopping development.” Mark explains the difference and has some harsh words for those playing the word game.

  • Highlights from The Travel News – It appears Delta Airlines DID offer passengers almost $10,000 to give up their seats on a flight from Grand Rapids to Minneapolis Friday evening; and Holland America is eliminating the proof of vaccination requirement for a limited number of upcoming cruises.
  • In our Smarter Traveler segment, Mark again reminds those traveling this summer to choose non-stop flights whenever possible. Fly early in the day if possible, opt for airlines offering multiple flights a day on a route, instead of just one flight, do your homework in advance and create a “plan B”, join frequent flyer clubs and pack light when possible. Mark also shares his recent trip to Oregon and offered some visitor tips on Astoria, Newport and the covered bridges near Eugene and Cottage Springs.

Both the FAA and the DOT are after the airlines

  • In The Travel News, both the FAA (Federal Aviation Authority) and the DOT (Department of Transportation) are after the airlines. The FAA says the airlines blaming them for the recent spike in delays and cancellations is a bunch of BS. “There are more flights scheduled than the system can handle…” said a United Airlines spokesperson. The FAA says on July 4th, the FAA had no staffing issues and the airlines still canceled 250 flights. The DOT says the airlines are charging families to sit together. If that doesn’t stop, the DOT says it will issue a regulation requiring the airlines to obey.
  • Princess Cruise Lines is advertising a $59 per night cruise from San Francisco. $59 a night? That seems WAYYYY too cheap. So we asked our cruise expert, Gwen Duncan, to investigate. She tells us it it’s really true.
  • The 5th Cordillera International Film Festival is slated for July 28-August 1 in Reno/Sparks. Rated one of the top 100 festivals in the world, the list of activities and film venues is impressive.
  • Mark answered a variety of questions from the mailbag, including those on being bumped off of a flight, having your flight canceled and a shout out to the skycaps at Southwest Airlines.
